Hey! This will be my first post as it is strongly recommended for emerging artists to have a blog and speak out about their art. 🙂 Honestly, I am not that into talking too much about my art and have always thought that art “should speak for itself”. But it turns out people want that. So these days I am working on several paintings at a time. I know that there are artists who focus on a single painting till they finish it. That’s not my case. I get bored very easily with the process of painting the same piece for days or weeks or months. I love details. And detailed paintings take so much time. So in order not to go crazy 🙂 I create several pieces at a time and while painting I already think about a new one. So today I am working on Hugh Hefner portrait. The founder of Playboy magazine passed away this fall. It’s not that I am a big fan of him, but I felt like I want to paint his portrait and put him into the kitchen – the place where his first Playboy edition was created. The man is definitely a legend, lived a long and extravagant life.
Not long time ago I went into a small antique shop in Old Montreal and saw several old Playboy editions. The one with young Donald Trump on the cover caught my attention. I wanted to take a look at its inside, but the grumpy sales lady wouldn’t let me open the sealed magazine before I pay. So I bought this 1990 Playboy edition for like a hundred CAD, already thinking of a new mixed media piece I would make with it. Today I am in process of creating it and will share it with you in the following post. Now about the issue of the magazine. A fun fact is that in 2017 Hefner’s son said that his father was “embarrassed” for having Trump on the cover back in 90s and called it “a mistake”. Was it because of his father’s political views? Hefner once said that being registered as Democrat, he felt more Independent and wasn’t supporting any of the parties. What I found inside (along with the naked bodies) is a big cold war echo that gave me an idea for a new painting.
